Sarasota: the circus
The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus gave its final performance only a few months ago (May 2017). But for much of their almost 150 years, they were the epitome of American entertainment. And they wintered in Sarasota. That alone made Sarasota one of my favorite stops in Florida. (And we didn't even get to see the Yankees, who also "winter" there. Well, Spring Training, and it hadn't started yet.)
Sarasota is where the Circus invented new acts and polished old ones. It was the entire circus experience, but maybe with a few rough edges -- which made it even more exciting. Moreover, it was "on the ground" rather than Madison Square Garden. The lion tamer's act is much more impressive from right outside the bars than from the balcony at MSG. I had a ball there!
