Uncle Phil and Aunt Belle

Phil Friedman, Mom's uncle, was solidly entrenched as a Hollywood character. I have since run across his name in a book that identified him as "the dean of casting directors". He really did 'discover' many actors and actresses. Today, I'm not sure of everyone in that litany of names. But I somehow forgot to mention Shirley Temple, who definitely belongs on the list. I have a picture that is a family heirloom, Shirley Temple at about 4 sitting on Uncle Phil's knee signing her first contract with a movie studio. I understand she also called him Uncle Phil.

No, I didn't take this photo. It's the picture that used to sit on Uncle Phil's desk when we visited him in 1951. And how I come to have it today is a story in itself.
