Yankee game before the trip

On July 2, two days before we embarked, Dad took Bob and me to our first Major League baseball game. Yankees vs Red Sox. Hey, we lived in the Bronx, of course we were Yankee fans. The Yanks won 5-2. Reading the box score, I realize how lucky we were to have seen Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams at their peaks. Other players were Phil Rizzuto, Yogi Berra, Johnny Mize, Gil McDougald, and Eddie Lopat pitching. For Boston, Joe's brother Dom DiMaggio was also playing CF, and we also saw Johnny Pesky, Lou Boudreau, and Mel Parnell pitching.

Bob at monuments to Lou Gehrig, Miller Huggins, and Babe Ruth

Yankee Stadium has had two major rebuilds since these photos were taken. The monuments used to actually be in play in center field; the outfielders had to avoid them when chasing a deep enough fly ball. And back then, the fans were allowed to walk on the field after the game; that's how I could get the shot of Bob and the monuments.
